On Thursday, October 15, 2026, millions of Californians will participate in the Great California ShakeOut, an annual earthquake drill designed to help individuals, schools, and communities prepare for earthquakes.

The Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools encourages students, educators, families, and community members to take part. Whether you’re in a classroom, office, or at home, practicing a few simple safety steps today can make a difference when an earthquake strikes.

Why Participate?

Earthquakes can happen without warning, and knowing how to respond is essential. The Great California ShakeOut provides an opportunity to:

  • Practice the life-saving actions of Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
  • Help students and staff feel more confident responding to an earthquake.
  • Review school and household emergency procedures.
  • Strengthen preparedness throughout our community.

When and Where

  • Date: Thursday, October 15, 2026
  • Time: 10:15 a.m.
  • Location: Anywhere! Schools, classrooms, workplaces, and homes throughout Tuolumne County are encouraged to participate.

How to Participate

Before the Drill

  • Identify safe locations in classrooms, offices, and homes
  • Review emergency procedures, evacuation routes, and communication plans.
  • Encourage students, staff, and families to participate.

During the Drill

At 10:15 a.m., practice these three essential safety steps:

  1. DROP to your hands and knees.
  2. COVER your head and neck and, if possible, get underneath a sturdy desk or table.
  3. HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops.

Practice these actions for at least 60 seconds.

After the Drill

Take a few moments to discuss what went well and identify opportunities to improve your emergency response plans.

Be Prepared Beyond the ShakeOut

Earthquake preparedness doesn’t end when the drill is over. Take time to secure heavy furniture and equipment, check emergency supplies, establish family communication plans, and practice safety procedures throughout the year.
