Showcasing Linguistic Brilliance

Tuolumne County's Young Spellmasters Shine at 49th Annual Dr. June McOmber Junior High Spelling Bee

The Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Office proudly presented the 49th Annual Dr. June McOmber Junior High Spelling Bee. This celebrated event once again highlighted the exceptional talents of our young spellers. Held at the Curtis Creek Elementary School Multi-Purpose Room, this year’s competition saw forty-three students from ten local schools demonstrate their spelling acumen in a spirited contest.

Participants from Belleview Elementary, Columbia Elementary, Connections Visual & Performing Arts Academy, Curtis Creek Elementary, Jamestown Elementary, Pinecrest Expedition Academy, Sonora Elementary, Summerville Elementary, Tioga High School, and Twain Harte School took to the stage, spelling their way through challenging rounds under the watchful eyes of our esteemed judges.

The evening was filled with anticipation and excitement, culminating in the recognition of this year’s top spellers:

  • First Place: Rachel Thomas, an 8th grader from Connections Visual and Performing Arts Academy
  • Second Place: Alice Sanfeliz of Curtis Creek Elementary
  • Third Place: Rory Jordan from Sonora Elementary

These students not only received accolades for their achievements but also t-shirts, Spelling Bee pins, certificates, and plaques to mark their success. Rachel Thomas and Alice Sanfeliz will advance to the state-level competition, proudly representing Tuolumne County at the Junior High Spelling Bee hosted by the San Joaquin County Office of Education on April 27, 2024.

The event was made possible through the dedication of Zack Abernathy, Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools, who served as the Spelling Master, and our committed team of volunteer judges and staff who ensured the event’s smooth running. Their contribution underscores the community’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and supporting our students’ growth and development.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all participants for their hard work, dedication, and outstanding performances. The Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Office looks forward to continuing this tradition of celebrating academic excellence and the achievements of our students in the years to come.
